In assembling a crew for an Antarctic expedition in the early 1900’s, legendary helmsman, Ernest Shackleton, is reported to have placed an unusual job advertisement:

Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.

While hardly a compelling proposition, the advertisement is said to have attracted over 2000 applications and in recent times, has been held up as an example of the importance of hiring for “character”, “temperament” and “attitude” above technical ability.

As it transpires, the voyage was unsuccessful, however, the expedition managed to survive the loss of its ship in the middle of the Antarctic pack ice. The crew escaped by camping on the sea ice until it disintegrated, then by launching the lifeboats to reach Elephant Island and ultimately, the inhabited island of South Georgia.

The moral of this story? Attitude is the root of all success. Hire for attitude.

This is not to diminish the importance of skills and experience. But all things being equal, Helm distinguishes a “good” candidate from a “great” candidate based on their attitude and beliefs and how that aligns with a company’s culture.
